Welsh Government publishes programme for reducing NHS waiting lists

The Welsh Government has published 'Our programme for transforming and modernising planned care and reducing waiting lists in Wales'. It includes four key commitments to people in Wales to help them access the health advice and services they need.

These are:

  • To increase health service capacity
  • To prioritise your diagnosis and treatment
  • To transform the way planned care is provided
  • To provide better information and support to patients
Regarding eye care: 'The focus will be on delivering more services in the community so people do not have to travel to a hospital and this means professionals in the community and in hospital eye departments are able to work at the top of their licence'. You can read the full Welsh Government report here.

A recent report by the Senedd Health and Social Care Committee identified ophthalmology as one of the specialties with the highest number of patient pathways awaiting treatment.
