Sight loss registration rules 'not fit for purpose'

New research commissioned by the Thomas Pocklington Trust, and based on a database compiled by Welsh Low Vision Services, has concluded that people with sight loss may be denied support because of outdated rules written over half a century ago.

In some areas, people are unable to access low vision services unless they are registered, but the research has shown that this support is needed before vision drops to registration level. Access criteria were written before low vision services were established in the NHS, and the report calls for new criteria to be adopted, so that people can seek help at an earlier stage, when rehabilitation is likely to be more effective.
