Enabling and Empowering in Ceredigion.
WCB are embarking on a new project in Ceredigion.
85% of people with sight problems in Wales cannot read their own post without specialist equipment or somebody reading it to them.
WCB and its partner members have established an all-Wales Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) network. This network has provided specialist assessments, training and advice to people with sight problems across Wales.
The network received funding from the Making the Connections project to build evidence to support people with sight problems to receive independent advice in relation to ICT.
As a result of this a new project has been launched within Ceredigion as a joint venture between WCB and the Ceredigion Association for the Blind, appointing Jill Cassidy as the ICT Development Officer.
Jill's role will be to visit individuals within Ceredigion to offer advice, demonstrations, support and guidance in all areas of ICT.
Enabling people to read their own post is one of the examples of advice and support which can be provided. Equipment from Hand Held Magnifiers, Video Magnifiers, Reading Machines, Scanners and Computer Software are examples of some of the technology which can be explored, restoring some of their independence.
No matter how slight or severe the sight loss there are a multitude of products which can assist, both for those who have little knowledge or access to technology, and those who are used to or have access to a computer.
A video magnifier will enable a person to enlarge any form of paper based material to a size which they can comfortably read. To improve clarity a number of colour combinations and contrasts can be used to improve readability. For those who find the magnifier is insufficient, a reading machine can be used to scan and convert text which will then be read back at a volume and speed which suits the individual. For those who have, or would like, access to a computer a range of products exist. On-screen magnifiers and screen readers will enable access for computer users.
Jill is supported at WCB by Owen Williams. Owen's work focuses on technical assessment, making sure that people get access to the technical support which best suits their needs, both in the workplace, through Access to Work, and at home.
