At present we pay a mileage rate of 35p per mile to our volunteers drivers and this will be available for volunteer visitors too. Our drivers are covered by our Insurance and insurance details can be obtained from the Treasurer as detailed on the Contacts page.
The Association needs the help of volunteers to carry out its aims and to fundraise. So if you are interested in helping blind and partially sighted people in Ceredigion through the work of the Association, there are opportunities for assisting with cash collections and flag days, as part of the committee and managing projects.
In Ceredigion there are nearly 500 blind and partially sighted people known to Social Services. We know that sight loss can cut you off from your social life and local activities so we want to contact all those on the register to find out who would like to be more involved. That is why the Association is working with Wales Council for the Blind with the help of a grant from CAVO to make this happen.
We are looking for eight volunteers who have sight impairments themselves. They will meet one afternoon a week to phone everyone in Ceredigion who is registered blind or partially sighted. They will be asking the people they call whether they would like to take part in activities or just to receive information. Each session will last about two hours.
There will be a Co-ordinator to support the callers and we are seeking a suitable volunteer for this task at the moment. Training about visual impairment will be arranged and there will be a Preparation Day for Volunteers and Co-ordinator.
We'd like to hear from anyone who is interested in taking part as a volunteer caller. So, if you are interested, please get in touch with Maldwyn James for more information on 01970 880638.
We are looking for volunteers who are themselves visually impaired who would like to take part in a project to improve services to others who are visually impaired.
In this project you will be phoning blind and partially sighted people in Ceredigion to find out :
What skills, knowledge and experience or other qualities are required for the task?
This task will be enjoyable and satisfying for someone who is confident and sociable.
You will have a good memory so that you can remember most of the questions you need to ask - but there will be a Co-ordinator there to prompt you if you forget what comes next.
You will be good at listening and at drawing people out.
You will need to be patient sometimes with people when you can't get the answers you need.
The Executive Committee of the Ceredigion Association are responsible for this project and one of their members will be chosen to be the contact.
There will be a Co-ordinator who will be responsible for the arrangements and you will be able to sort out practical problems with this person.
The phone sessions will take place once a week probably on a four-week rota. Each session will last about two hours, Each volunteer will take part in at least one session per month.
The times and days that are most convenient will be agreed. Once the days and times have been agreed you will have a regular session.
The sessions will take place in Llwyncelyn Village Hall
The Training Day will also take place there.
There will be a Preparation Day for the volunteers and the Co-ordinator.
During this Day, you will learn about the project and you will all together help write the questions that you will be asking in the phone calls. Then you will have time to become familiar with the questions before you start your first session.
We will also discuss how best to record the answers you receive.
Then you will sorted into pairs for the phone sessions so that you will have company and someone to discuss the calls with.
You will be part of a team to accomplish this project.
In each session there will always be three of you - two volunteers and the Co-ordinator.
There will be a Training Day before the project starts which will cover the arrangements and the contents of the project.
We will try to arrange for the Volunteer to attend a visual impairment awareness training session if they can make themselves available.
This project will result in opening doors for other blind and partially sighted people but you will also be demonstrating that visually impaired people can play a full part in providing a service themselves.
