About the Project

The aim of the Sports and Leisure Project is two-fold. It hopes:

  • to assist sports and leisure workers - coaches, organisers, leisure centre staff etc. - to accommodate people with sight problems in venues, events and activities and
  • to encourage visually impaired people to participate in sports and leisure activities.

We would like to see a situation where sight problems do not prevent people from enjoying the facilities with friends, family or on their own - in the same way that sighted people do. There may sometimes be a demand for special groups but we believe that this is only a part of what is needed. And our aim is to provide the advice, the training and the guidelines that are necessary.

A major part of his activity as Sports Development Officer for WCB, Nicky carried out user-audits of Leisure Facilities in Wales. Each unitary authority had at least one audit conducted at a venue in their area. The audit made recommendations about how to improve the facilities and resources at the venue in order that visually impaired visitors are better served.

Nicky conducted a consultation to form the WCB Sports Strategy. The strategy is online here. A Sports Strategy Implementation Group has been formed. The first meeting took place at Coleg Powys on 31st January 2003. The second meeting will take place on the 12th May at the same venue.
